ArtSpace-Cleveland is presenting an Artist Workshop on Affordable Live/Work Housing for Ownership on Friday November 9th (1:00 – 5:00 pm) and Saturday, November 10th (9:00 am – 1:00 pm.) at the Gould Loft, 1400 East 30th Street. Cost: $25

Laura Weathered, executive director of the Near NorthWest Arts Council (NNWAC), an artist-directed non-profit organization in Chicago, will lead the workshop. Under her direction, the NNWAC initiated the $3.2m development of the Acme Artists Community permanent affordable work/live space. It is Chicago’s first artist housing designed, developed and owned by professional artists, offering a significant hedge against gentrification. The project demonstrates affordable housing from a consumer’s perspective offering artists substantial input on design and development.

ArtSpace-Cleveland is working in partnership with: The Greater Cleveland Partnership, St. Clair Superior Development Corporation, Dominion, the Cuyahoga Community Land Trust, COSE for the Arts and Community Partnership for Arts and Culture. Sponsors include the city of Cleveland, Forest City Enterprises and the Ohio Arts Council.

Dear Editor Lewis:
Thank you for your attention to St. Clair Superior and Cleveland’s AsiaTown and Asian community. I do, however, take issue with journalist Charu Gupta manipulating the story in such a way as to create the impression that negativity exists around this overwhelmingly positive initiative. People from many different backgrounds are working together to promote a unique cultural district in a great city and when this happens it should be embraced. Bent on finding something wrong with the community’s efforts, she finally landed on the fact that several of the staff members working on the AsiaTown initiative are white and that one of the initiative’s goals is to attract visitors. Creating an impression of racial divisiveness is counterproductive. Promoting and sharing the wonderful contributions of the Asian community to our city and region should be welcomed. It is through this cultural dialogue and exchange that we can grow and embrace the diversity that Cleveland represents.

On September 29th around 220 guests had a swine-time on the top floor of First Interstate owned Shoreway Industrial, the former White Motor site at E. 79th and St. Clair Ave. 21 pigs were sold in a lively auction. Day of the Dead Celebration 2007October 26th to 28th Artistas Latinos Unidos (ALU) Committee and St. Clair Superior Development Corporation are sponsoring the Altars Exhibition to commemorate the Day of the Dead.
With this tradition in mind, 13 artists from greater Cleveland community have come together to share their artistic visions of an “Ofrenda”, each “Ofrenda” reflects the artist’s personal beliefs and interpretation of a traditional or contemporary offering in honor of his or her departed loved ones.

Blue Pike Farm Honey Wins 3rd Place Award.First year "Beez From The Hood" best blue blood bees from Bratenahl and 13 other entries!Honey from the 'ghetto beez' from hives located at Blue Pike Farm in the St. Clair Superior neighborhood competed for the first time at the Lorain County Fair in Wellington, OH. and flew away with a white ribbon for 3rd place in the Extracted Honey Category: "Extra White."Blue Pike Farm's Carl Skalak was pleased to hear the news and exclaimed: "Award winning honey from bees in the city. Who would have bee-lieved it?"The hives and it's bees are owned and managed by Blue Pike Farm's official Apiarist, Karin Wishner.Karin's Apiary also took first place in the "Water White" category and was awarded the highest score of all 68 entries in Extracted Honey competition.Karin is no stranger to winning awards for her honey. Last year as a first year bee keeper she took a total of 6 awards at the Lorain county Fair for her honey and honey related products.This is only Karin's 2nd year keeping bees and her 5th year with the Lorain County Beekeeper's Association where she is currently Vice President.

I just got a message from the head of a BioTech Company that is moving into the St. Clair Superior neighborhood. He wants to get involved and know what is going on in the neighborhood. I LOVE getting this kind of call. First, a company with all kinds of choices selected our neighborhood. AND they want to contribute to the vitality of the community by being involved.

I think keeping people informed and getting them involved is one of the things Cleveland community development corporations do best. Each Cleveland neighborhood has an agency that serves this role. If you are not involved with yours, give them a call. They want to know you!

Dragon Boat Festival

The Festival will be held on Saturday, September 1 and Sunday, September 2, 2007 in Cleveland's Historic Flats. Opening Ceremonies begin at 11:00 AM. Races will be held from 12:00 to 5:00 PM

Dragon Boat racing incorporates high energy, fitness, team building and recreational exercise in a fun and competitive atmosphere! It is an excellent recreational sport for men and women of all ages and fitness levels. Individual strength is less important than teamwork, coordination and cooperation.
Dragon Boat racing is an exciting event for participants and spectators alike. The sport is growing in popularity throughout the world. It is an excellent team building activity for friends and co-workers.

Street Crews Make Changes

In the St. Clair Superior neighborhood, the gang members are on 90.3 WCPN and going to work instead of standing on the corners. Mario was on the radio this morning. He has seen people shot and has worried about getting shot. He has stood in court before a judge for things he did. Mario is a handsome and polite young man with a contagious grin. When he shakes your hand and greets you his eyes are full of life.

One day a community leader stopped Mario and said to him “Mario, what are you doing?” What are you doing with your life. This leader is Steve of S.A.N. Construction. Steve gave Mario a chance and a job. Steve has done things he is not proud of too, and he openly admits this. Steve does not have to help these young people, but he is volunteering his time and paying 8 youth for construction work through S.A.N. Construction.

The new AsiaTown logo made its first public appearance today, Friday the 13th of July. Cory (pictured on left) and Katharyne from St. Clair Superior Development Corporation (SCSDC) stenciled the AsiaTown logo 3 places in the community. This is the logo’s first appearance, but far from its last. We will begin to use this logo - a bonsai tree design with all 12 animals from the Chinese Zodiac – all through the neighborhood.

The neighborhood has long been attractive to new arrivals, including Croatians, Slovenians, Germans, Poles, Albanians, African-Americans, and Hispanics. The Asian population has a long history in the neighborhood as well. In the last 20 years or so the Asian community really began to make its mark on the neighborhood and to add population as well as senior housing, restaurants, businesses, and shops. Many Asian cultures are represented in the neighborhood including Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean to name a few. So next time you are out and about, try some pho, lychee bubble tea, bibimbob, curry, dim sum or try them all and then some!

Unity in the Community!

Upon leaving the Marine Corp in 1982, I thought about what I could do to help improve my community. So I started developing relationships with young people; coaching football, engaging myself in school activities with my own children as well as other children in the community. This was my way of showing civic pride.

Now, years later, I embark on a new journey; focusing on helping to end the gang violence and preparing our youth to integrate into the job market, as well as motivating them to be proud of themselves and the community we live in. This can be accomplished with collaboration; neighborhood groups, corporations, city officials, as well as community leaders of all ages. Together we can bring hope and new life to a community filled with gangs and drugs. We all have a role to play in bringing “Unity in the Community!”

The Fryer is Back!

Sometimes you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. That was the case with The Town Fryer. When Susie closed her doors it left a huge void in the St. Clair Superior neighborhood. Now she’s back and better than ever. She offers us some good (Garden of Eden salads) to balance the oh-so-bad (Fried Twinkies, Oreos, & Pickles.) She even offers a vegetarian section to the new menu. We had a great time at St. Clair Superior’s June Business Social at The Fryer.

In the St. Clair Superior neighborhood there is a vacant lot ready for development. A new concept recently emerged through thought leadership by a few great people, including Keith and David at PURE (http://www.progressiveurban.com/). Build boxes. Simple, square boxes. Clean, edgy, customizable, inexpensive, industrial-vibe, Dwell Magazine-esque, and again - inexpensive. It is new construction, with new plumbing, new windows, new electrical, but you would get that old Cleveland warehouse feel. What if you could buy a basic box for $100,000? Two years later, you could bi-sect your space vertically by adding a second floor and stairs, or by adding walls for bedrooms. SCSDC unveiled our new banners on April 6th with a celebratory crowd and great food from A Touch of Sugar. We will have 57 Authentic Cleveland banners unifying our commercial districts. The images are of Authentic People, Culture and Art in the St. Clair Superior community.

Ohio Technical College Open House

Neighbors are invited to attend Ohio Technical College's Winter Open House, Friday, February 23rd from 9am to 3pm. Ohio Technical College is located at 1374 East 51st Street. Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the campus, learn about program offerings, and meet with automotive racing teams, instructors, and financial aid and admission representatives. Demonstrations, including the SkillsUSA regional mechanic competition, will take place throughout the day. Day of the Dead

Dia de los Muertos – The Day of the Dead

In Mexican culture it is traditional to observe the "Día de los Muertos"-- the Day of the Dead. It is a colorful, festive occasional where the spirits of deceased loved ones are welcomed back for a day of ritual and amusement. It is one of the most celebrated events in all of Latin America. In the Cleveland’s St. Clair Superior neighborhood, we’ll celebrate on October 28, 2006.

Salvador Gonzalez and other leaders from the Latino community, regional artists and local civic leaders will partner with the St. Clair Superior Development Corporation to plan the event. The event will take place on East 33rd Street in and around Josaphat Arts Hall. The festivities will draw visitors from around the region and state and include "ofrendas" or "offerings" for the Day of the Dead created by local artists, music by Mariachis and pre-Columbian dances, as well as traditional Mexican food.

Year of the Dog Auction

Our Year of the Dog project is a public art exhibition that placed 25 life-size fiberglass dogs, designed and created by local artists, throughout the St. Clair Superior landscape. This project was undertaken:
• To raise awareness of the Asian cultures present in this community through the Chinese New Year,
• To support local artists and display their work for all to see, and
• To encourage economic development by drawing people into the neighborhood to shop in our retail establishments, eat in our restaurants, and generally demonstrate that this is a great place to live!

The dogs will be auctioned at our Year of the Dog Celebration and Auction, to be held at Josaphat Arts Hall (1433 East 33rd Street) beginning at 5:30pm on October 21, 2006. Tickets are $100 and include a 9-course Chinese meal catered by C&Y Restaurant. Proceedings will include both live and silent auctions.
